hello, fellow traveler
(it's not as lonely out here as you might think)
flashing past me
on this new construction country road
at 1:47 am:
statistically we are more likely,
in city areas, to meet,
but nothing is impossible
and here we both are
with the world empty,
except for us,
except for each other.
do you wonder, same as I do you,
where I’m going?
I’ll tell you the answer is home.
I’ll tell you there’s precious little else
that would motivate me to go
at this hour.
perhaps you too, are on your way home
however that may be shaped.
since of course there are many forms of home
and of course home might be a person
or an errand for a person
who is home to you.
it’s not like I will ever know
what drives you on in the dark
at this hour.
but for a moment
here we sit
driving, passing across lives
for an instant.
both of us here
on our way somewhere else
at the same time,
however unlikely it might be.
